Sorry!

An update is coming... but last week monday I got some rather bad medical news and it threw me off!
Things are finally getting back to normal though... but I'm on a diet that is Gluten and Dairy free.

If anyone has any awesome resources for recipes or anything, I'd really appreciate it.

  1. One good thing to remember about a gluten free diet is how healthy it actually is. It involves eating anything fresh and unadulterated- so all meats, vegetables, and fruits as well as plain white rice. An easy tip: stay away from anything creamy or breaded.

  2. I'm vegan, so you can feel free to run any dairy-free stuff by me! Also, Anna from Anna Reads (www.annareads.com) is gluten-free, so I'm sure she can help, too!

  3. I do! I'm on a gluten/vegan diet, and I have a bunch of information. First, switch to rice noodles so you can still eat pasta. Natural food stores have better prices for these than regular grocery stores. Also, you can buy gluten-free bread so you can keep eating sandwiches and stuff. If you want, you can buy gluten free flour and bread mixes to make your own stuff, which is what I do. Gluten Free Pantry is the best brand of flour and bread mix I've tried. For some variety, look into quinoa as an alternative to rice. Amaranth is another good grain and makes a great replacement for grits or cream of wheat. Bigger natural food stores carry grains like that in bulk for a lower price, as well as several premade gluten free alternatives to things. Read labels to make sure certain things aren't in the foods you like to buy. There's a list at http://www.csaceliacs.org/gluten_grains.php that can help you with that. This website has a ton of good recipes: http://www.glutenfreeda.com/recipe-index.asp, and once you get comfortable with looking for gluten free foods, you can find a lot of recipes on All Recipes. Karma Chow has a bunch of really good recipes too: http://karmachow.com/recipes/

Good luck, and if you have any questions, feel free to email me. beckwithliz[at]rocketmail[dot]com

  4. Thank you so much, guys!
Yeah, I've been googling the heck out of this stuff... and actually, it's pretty cool, most places have something that's gluten free!

Thank you especially, mizzlizzbeck! I had no idea that the health food stores would be cheaper! I will email you!!

  6. My mom is allergic to milk. Silk Vanilla soy milk is actually really good! We don't buy the plain kind but the vanilla is good. The chocolate Silk is good for smoothies!

  7. My mother-in-law is on a gluten free diet. I would say double check rice noodles before buying (some contain wheat flour also) and I do know that Uno's (the pizza place) does have a few gluten free items on their menu, including a pizza that my MiL really likes.

  8. I have Celiac so I am Gluten free and pretty much only eat cultured or lactose free dairy. The two pastas I like best are Tinkyada and Bionaturae. Udis bread is good and reasonable calories. They also make the best crust. There are a lot of Iphone Apps for gluten free dining and most chains these days are good. The rice bowls, hard tacos and salads at Chipotles are GF.
Hey, thanks for following Fangs Wands and Fairy Dust. It does take getting used to and the calories on some stuff can really be hi b/c of the nut flours and such. Sadly, there is no substitute for what Gluten does in bread; it is the difference between bread and cake. But you'll manage and learn. I agree that Silk has some good products like their creamer.

It sounds like the medical news could have been worse if changing the food you eat helps and you don't need stuff like chemo. I am not thrilled to be Celiac but it's better than other autoimmune diseases like diabetes. And, it helps me skip the bread basket and desserts so it helps with weight management. SOY SAUCE is not GF, neither is Spelt. Tamari is okay.
    Good luck
