Feature & Follow

Welcome to another lovely Feature & Follow!

This weeks question seems to be a sort of follow up to last weeks...

Q: What hyped up book do you think was worth all the talk?

Man... what a question.
I suspect my answer will be one that comes up a lot, but...

Harry Potter
This series deserves every bit of hype it gets.
All 7 of the books are in the top 10 of most selling books of all time 0_0

These books got MILLIONS of children reading.
These book got MILLIONS of adults reading.

Were there some plot holes?
Yes...

Yet, even with the plot holes, this series is a triumph.
The characters are strong and wonderful.
The girls aren't OBSESSED with romance.

They are filled to the brim with a cleverness you rarely find in YA books these days.
Plus... like Twilight, there is some pretty great humor out there surrounding them...
especially the movies:

And speaking of the movies... they only acted to endear this series further...
We have literally watched these children grow up... and the movies have
a wonderful sense of whimsy about them.

I truly loved this series.
It made me wish, strongly, that this world existed.

  13. Yeah, your answer has come up a lot. It still doesn't interest me though. Can't explain it. I wish I could get into it. I'm more Sci-Fi than Fantasy. I've just never had a desire to read Harry Potter or Twilight or any paranormal books. Those two books in particular have seemed to define a generation...or two.

    1. See, there's a total difference between saying "Fantasy isn't for me" and saying, "I don't read hyped books"
It's fine if you don't care for the fantasy genre, many people don't... but not reading books just because they're getting attention, without looking into them, you could really be missing out. (I'm assuming you don't read hyped Science Fiction either, based on your FF post... and I think you've probably missed a lot of great stuff if that's the case)

And Harry Potter isn't paranormal, it's fantasy. I'm not much a fan of paranormal novels either... and I'm not in the generation that grew up with Harry Potter... I'm older than that, but can still appreciate them for what they are, a great story.

RE: ASOIF The wait for ADWD must have been horrible. When I read the note at the back of AFFC, I laughed so hard because you can tell he really thought the book would have been out the following year. I really hope the wait for TWOW isn't going to be that long. I heard a rumor that we probably wouldn't see it until at least 2014, but I hope HBO puts a little bit of pressure on him to finish sooner than that because there's so many things I need to know now. 1. Well, the key is really this:

      Do you like Fantasy novels?

If fantasy novels aren't your thing, then you might think this is just an ok read, but if you enjoy them, then read on!

Also remember, these books age with the characters... as in, the first books start out more Middle Grade, and they evolve, getting darker, with more complex relationships as they go on. They kind of grew up as they went :)

    1. The thing to remember with Harry Potter is 1. It's fantasy. If you don't like fantasy, you'll probably feel "meh" about Harry Potter, and 2. It ages as the books go. It starts out very middle grade and evolves to be darker and more adult as the series goes on.

      Delete
    2. That's why I'm confused as to why I couldn't get into Harry Potter. I like fantasy and I tried reading it when I was in 7th grade. I figured that because I loved it when it was read to me that I would love it on my own. Not the case. :(

      Delete
    3. Understandable... in 7th grade, if you didn't get past the first few books, they might have just been to kiddy for you... they really do age, writing and plot-wise, as they go... then again, some people just don't like Harry Potter, LOL, there's nothing wrong with that either!!!

    1. I agree... but then, I think people forgot about it, or thought they had to answer with books they've heard about lately... because I also think 1984 was worth the hype, and To Kill a Mockingbird... but you didn't really see anyone mention anything too old, or that hasn't been hyped recently (such as... George R. R. Martin's Game of Thrones... I mean, that's a fairly old series... but I think it made a few people's list, not because they were readers from the beginning, but because they dug the show and read the books... I was glad to see it... but it wasn't chosen because it's an old classic XD)

    1. I actually don't think there is anything wrong with that.

Some people aren't fans of fantasy, some people are sick to death of the orphan boy story, and heck, some people just didn't dig it, it is very, VERY Middle Grade when it starts out, and if you're used to fantasy like Tolkien or Abercrombie or Martin... well, it falls short.

The only people I take issue with are the ones who won't even try it because it's "too popular, so it must be crap". That really bothers me... it's just the whole "I'm too cool for you" mentality, and it's arrogant and annoying. XD
