The prize is an Emily the Strange Prize Pack!
Now on to the Hop:
The Question This Week:
"When you read a book that you just can't get into, do you stick it out and keep reading or move to your next title?"
If I can't get into a book, and it's not totally awful, I'll put it down and pick it up again later. Sometimes that later is a couple of hours, sometimes it's a couple of days, sometimes it's years.
A current example of this? The Familiars. I picked it up and started reading it, but I was still so engrossed in the story I'd just finished (Maria V. Snyder's Spy Glass) that I just couldn't get into The Familiars. I suspect I might pick it up again this weekend though!
Now for Follow Friday!
The question of the week:
Just hopping by!
ReplyDeleteUsually if I can't get into a book I just can't finish it. I would rather move onto one of my other books that I want to read. I keep those books sometimes. I put them in a pile where I might donate them to someplace or give them away in a contest since they're only barely gently used.
Here's my hop: http://jessica-agreatread.blogspot.com/2010/10/book-blogger-hop_15.html
That is good to know. I'm hopping on by but I's so adding Ray to my list of authors on my iPhone to check out. I still want to pet the squids. LOL!
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!

Hi Heather! Just hopping on by!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on your statement about setting it aside. Sometimes it's just not the write time for that book :).
I already follow you but I still love your blog!
I've been wanting to read Something Wicked This Way Comes, for FOREVER! Mostly just cause I like the title hehe!
ReplyDeleteIt's rare that if I have stopped reading a book because I don't like it that I will pick it up again. So props to you for doing that!!
Happy Friday!!
Hop on by! :D
Hopping by to say hi (I'm an old follower). I put The Halloween Tree on my TBR list!
ReplyDeleteI try to finish a book but if I can't I put it away. I usually bookmooch them and that way I can trade it for another book I really want to read!
http://booklovingmommy.blogspot.com
hi from the Hop!
ReplyDeleteI've read Poison Study, haven't gotten around to Spy Glass yet. :) Luved Poison Study though!
I usually don't have to stop reading books because I'm picky about what I read. But when I do come across something I'm not into, I give it 50 to 100 pages to see if it's just a slow start. I totally know what you mean about still being so into a book you just finished that you can't get into the next one you're reading! I usually have to take a day off from reading after finishing a really great book.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!
Hopping by to say hi :)
ReplyDeleteIf I find that I'm really not getting into a book, I'll push myself to finish unless it's truly terrible!! If it's ridiculous or boring me to tears, then I might as well quit. I figure that if I get to the point where I'm ready to throw in the towel - there's no sense in trying to review it since it'll be unfavorable anyway (ya know?)
I've only ever not finished one book.
Have a great weekend!

hi im just stopping by to say hello, im following your blog and taking your readathon challenge!
ReplyDeleteKai
Happy HOP! I'm getting to the point where if it doesn't feel right,I stop. I don't force myself. It either flows or it doesn't and turning reading into a chore serves no purpose. I LOVE Maria Snyder's Study series. Ahhhhh Valek *sigh*
ReplyDeleteCome HOP by and visit
Thanks for stopping by mine! Happy Weekend!
ReplyDeleteI just read your comment on my blog hop. I have finished ALL three Eragon books. Man are they a lot of work!! lol And there is still no end! I have no idea if I'll remember anything from the first three by the time the 4th bk comes out. As for what I didn't finish - one of the bks was a Yasmine Galenorn Bk. The series about the sisters. It just wasn't my thing but everyone else loves it so what do I know! I can't remember the other one. I usually try to stick it out even if I just skim.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by and happy blogging....Im a new follow today too...:D
ReplyDeleteHey, Heather!! To answer the question you asked, I think a lukewarm review is totally fair if you didn't like the book. As long as nothing is rude and you stay respectful, i don't think you don't have to give every book a great review just b/c the author sent it to you :) That's just my two cents, hope it helps!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by on the Hop. I usually finish books I've accepted for review. If I ever do give up on one I'll pass it along to someone else. So far there was only one that I had to push myself to finish and that was Molly Fox's Birthday. I'll probably be giving that one away in the Gratitude Giveaway next month. Maybe it will find a good home!
ReplyDeleteThank you for dropping by! I'm a new follower! Your rating system is cute!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog! I hope you have a great well-read weekend!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog! Returning the favor. Have a good weekend!
ReplyDeleteHey Heather! In the last several years there has only been one book I haven't read to the end of. I know I'm probably going to get struck down for saying this, but it was "Halfway to the Grave" by Jeaniene Frost. I don't know what it was. I just couldn't get into it. I have about 50 pages left and I just haven't been able to bring myself to finish it.
ReplyDeleteHi, Thanks for stopping by my blog! I'm an old follower, and I agree with you about the books. sometimes I'm just not in the mood for something, but when I come back to it is amazing, just depends :P
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend :D
Just stopping by to thank you for visiting us at Murphy's Library.
ReplyDeleteHope you're having a good weekend :)

Hi, returning your visit on the Hop!
ReplyDeleteI love your golden squid, btw - he's gorgeous!
I'm not familiar with The Familiars - ha ha couldn't resist! - what kind of book is it? I haven't started Spy Glass yet but I'm enjoying the story, and I know what you mean about having a book fill you so full you can't start anything else for a while, until your equilibrium settles - recently, Room was like that for me.

P.S. NEW FOLLOWER ;)
Thanks for visiting, Heather...I do enjoy this Hop and the chance to visit lots of blogs and see how bloggers answer the questions.
ReplyDeleteMaybe one day I will go back to the books I dropped, but my TBR pile is pretty big. I can't get weighed down with something I don't like. I'm like you, mood plays a big part in it. Thanks for stopping by my blog!

I've heard so many great things about Something Wicked This Way Comes. I'll have to read it this Halloween, thanks for the recommendation. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for hopping by my blog. A few months ago I stopped trying to read Crime and Punishment. I really wanted to read it and I've read several classics. I just couldn't get into this one. A woman at the local bookstore and I were chatting and she said that she hasn't been able to finish any Russian novel. I'm hoping that's not the case with me.
ReplyDeleteHopping back. Re your question...Let's see...what books haven't I been able to get through lately...Guardian of the Gate by Michelle Zink and Wish by Alexandra Bullen are the first two that come to mind. Both books were loved by many bloggers but just didn't do it for me. Perhaps if I tried them again, I'd like them better, but just didn't have the patience to keep slogging. How about you?
ReplyDeleteThx for stopping by the blog....happy reading!

Thanks for stopping by my blog!
ReplyDeletehmm it normally takes me about two days to read a book. This does depend on how good the book is, how long it is, and how much homework can I avoid doing without failing all my classes. haha.
Hi Heather! Thanks for stopping by my blog on the hop. I've found my way to yours and am your newest follower! Enjoy what's left of the weekend!

Hoppin' by. Great blog and now following :). Hope you had a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteGood point about returning to a book later. It goes to show that your taste for books is never static but changing along with you.
ReplyDeleteHopping by to return your visit & following :o)
Thanks for stopping by my blog! I agree about coming back to a book. I tried to read Crime and Punishment twice and put it down. The third time around I just fell in love with it. Love your blog--I will have to check out your crafts, too....
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog.
ReplyDeleteIt really depends on the book. I do not have a certain time frame nor page number for me to decide when I should put the book down. However, if I am so bored I fall asleep after 5 pages it usually is just too much to plow through. But with Fallen it was mildly boring until page 182 where it finally picked up. I did finish it but I shouldn't of.
Mad Scientist
I saw you on my hop. I'm a new follower and I'm the same with putting down books. If I cant get into one I try to go to it later.
ReplyDeleteHopping thru...
ReplyDeleteI've done that where I'll put a book down and returning to it later. It's worked very well for me.
Thanks for stopping by my blog.
I am returning the hopping favor =) I like your blog and am now a new follower. I look forward to your future reviews.
ReplyDeleteHappy Reading! =)
Hi! Thanks for follwing my blog.
ReplyDeleteThis is me returning the favor. :)
Thanks for stopping by my blog. I love your blog and now following. To answer your question from my blog
ReplyDeleteThey asked me not to review it because they didn't want to have a bad review. They didn't ask back for the book though.
Thanks for stopping by. I really want to read the Spy Glass series. I think I'll bump them up on my to read list.
ReplyDeleteThat has happened to me; if I'm still feeling the last book I read, the new book might not grab me. So I'll set it aside to come back to later. (unless it's just a plain horrid book .. that's a different story) Thanks for stopping by!
ReplyDeleteJulie @ Knitting and Sundries
Hi, thank you for visiting my blog! Just hopping back, hope you had a great weekend :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for being my 50th follower!! :) I'm a new follower of yours too.
ReplyDeleteMy answer to your question (What books have I left behind)
I left behind Eragon completely and have not looked back. That is the only book that I can think of right now. Mostly I'll pick a book back up, but sometimes I don't.
Hey! This is my answer I posted for your question:
ReplyDeleteIt's been quite a while since I've read anything I couldn't finish, fortunately! I can't even remember... definitely before I started my blog :)
To answer your question at book'dout.wordpress.com, in the last year I havn't been able to finish The life You Want by Emily Barr, Witch Hill by Marion Zimmer Bradley and The Inceptor Trilogy Vol 1 by Maureen Farandeen. All for very different reasons :P)
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog
I've done that before, you never know when a book you really didn't like first time around will be more interesting to you a year or two later. Never say never ever to a book :)
ReplyDeleteHopping back! I'm a new follower :)
ReplyDeleteI totally want to read The Familiars!
Thanks so much for hopping by! I totally know what you mean - sometimes a story just grabs you so tightly that you have to take some time and process it before you can get involved in another world!
ReplyDeleteThanks for hopping by and leaving such a thoughtful comment.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog! I'm already a follower.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!
